Guo Xi had a very careful way of working. His son said he would sit at a clean table by a bright window. He would burn incense on both sides of him. He chose his finest brushes and his most exquisite ink. He even washed his hands and cleaned his ink-stone. He did this to prepare his mind to be calm and undisturbed. Only then would he start his painting.

He created a new way to show views in his art. He called this technique "the angle of totality." Some people call this "Floating Perspective." It allows the viewer to see a scene from many different angles at once. This is different from how Western art often shows space. He also used many layers of ink washes to build up shapes. This helped him show how mist and clouds look in the air.

Guo Xi lived from about 1020 to 1090. He was from Henan Province. One of his most famous paintings is called "Early Spring," made in 1072. He also painted "The Coming of Autumn" and "Deep Valley."

In "Deep Valley," he used light ink to show a quiet valley. It shows old trees trying to live on steep cliffs. He also wrote a book called "The Lofty Message of Forest and Streams."

He believed that nature changes with every season. He said spring mountains look light and as if they are smiling. In summer, mountains have a blue-green color. He thought autumn mountains look bright and tidy. In winter, he said mountains look sad and tranquil, like they are sleeping.

He used these ideas to make his paintings feel alive. His unique brushstrokes inspired many artists who came after him.
