People think these are some of the best paintings from that time. His art was so good that it inspired many others. Artists in the Zhe school in China studied him. Even early Japanese painters like Shūbun and Sesshū were inspired by him.

Ma Yuan had a very special way of painting. He is famous for his landscape scrolls. These are long paintings that show nature. He used a style called "one-corner" composition. This means he put the main subject in a corner or on a side. The rest of the painting was left mostly empty.

He also painted trees in a unique way. People said his pine trees looked as strong as iron wire. He used ink and light colors on silk to make his art.

Painting was a family tradition for Ma Yuan. He was born in Qiantang, which is now called Hangzhou. His great-grandfather, Ma Fen, was a painter for the Northern Song court. His grandfather, Ma Xingzu, worked for the Southern Song court. His father, Ma Shirong, also held that same job.

Because he was so popular, many other painters tried to copy him. This can make it hard to know if all old paintings are truly his. Still, his influence on art in China and Japan is very large. He died in the year 1225.
