Ma Yuan was a highly influential Chinese painter of the Song dynasty. His artistic style helped form the Ma-Xia school of painting. This school was created by the works of Ma Yuan and another painter named Xia Gui. Many historians consider their paintings to be among the finest from that historical period. His unique methods left a lasting mark on the world of art. He inspired the Zhe school of painters in China. He also influenced early Japanese painters such as Shūbun and Sesshū.

Ma Yuan was a master of landscape scrolls, which are long, rolled paintings of nature. He developed a very specific technical style during his career. At first, his work was inspired by the artist Li Tang. Eventually, Ma Yuan created a personal style with strong decorative elements. A contemporary source described his pine trees as being as strong as iron wire. He often used ink and light colors on silk to create his images.

A defining feature of his work is the "one-corner" composition. In this style, the painter pushes the main subjects to a corner or a side. This leaves the rest of the painting mostly empty. This use of space creates a specific feeling in the viewer. Ma Yuan was also a versatile artist who did not just paint landscapes. He produced delicate paintings of flowers and series of mountains and water.

Ma Yuan was born into a family of professional painters in Qiantang. This city is known today as Hangzhou in the Zhejiang province. Painting was a tradition that spanned several generations of his family. His great-grandfather, Ma Fen, served as a court painter during the Northern Song. Both his grandfather, Ma Xingzu, and his father, Ma Shirong, held positions at the Southern Song court. After 1189, Ma Yuan received a similar position under Emperor Guangzong.

Ma Yuan enjoyed a very high reputation within the imperial court. He was a favorite of Emperor Ningzong. The emperor was so moved by the art that he wrote several poems inspired by Ma Yuan's paintings. Ma Yuan's son, Ma Lin, also became a painter-in-waiting. This made Ma Lin the last painter in the family line. Ma Yuan lived until his death in the year 1225. His life and career represent a peak of Song dynasty artistic achievement.

Because Ma Yuan was so popular, his influence was massive. Many other painters began to imitate his specific style. This popularity makes it difficult for experts to identify all his works. While many album leaves are attributed to him, their authorship is often disputed. However, some pieces have secure attribution. These include "Walking on a Mountain Path in Spring" in the National Palace Museum. Other certain works are found in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Dean Perry Collection in Cleveland.

We can still study his important works in major museums today. A very important hand scroll is kept in the Cincinnati Art Museum. This piece is titled "The Four Sages of Shangshan." Other paintings are located in the Palace Museum in Beijing and the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Ma Yuan also holds a place in the history of science and technology. He was the first artist to depict a fishing reel in a painting. This detail appeared in his work titled "Angler on a Wintry Lake."
