A defining feature of his work is the "one-corner" composition. In this style, the painter pushes the main subjects to a corner or a side. This leaves the rest of the painting mostly empty. This use of space creates a specific feeling in the viewer. Ma Yuan was also a versatile artist who did not just paint landscapes. He produced delicate paintings of flowers and series of mountains and water.

Ma Yuan was born into a family of professional painters in Qiantang. This city is known today as Hangzhou in the Zhejiang province. Because Ma Yuan was so popular, his influence was massive. Many other painters began to imitate his specific style. This popularity makes it difficult for experts to identify all his works. While many album leaves are attributed to him, their authorship is often disputed. However, some pieces have secure attribution. These include "Walking on a Mountain Path in Spring" in the National Palace Museum. Other certain works are found in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Dean Perry Collection in Cleveland.
