He is known as the founder of the Kanō school. This was a group of artists who became very famous. They painted many things for many years. Masanobu specialized in Zen paintings. He also painted Buddhist deities and Bodhisattvas. These are holy figures in the Buddhist religion. His work helped start a long tradition of art.

Masanobu used a special way to paint called suiboku. This is an ink and wash style. It came from painting styles in China. Masanobu added a Japanese touch to this style. He used more defined forms in his art. This made his paintings look unique. One of his surviving works is a hanging scroll. It is called "Zhou Maoshu Appreciating Lotuses." Very few of his original paintings still exist today.

His life began with a family of warriors. His father was named Kanō Kagenobu. Kagenobu was a samurai and an amateur artist. Masanobu came from a long family line. He was a descendant of Kanō Muneshige. This man was a samurai from the Kamakura period. Masanobu also had links to the Fujiwara clan. He learned much from a priest-painter named Tenshō Shūbun. Some say Shūbun gave him most of his training.

Masanobu held a very important job in Japan. He was an official painter for the Ashikaga shogunate. This role is called goyō eshi. He earned this position through his skill. He also used his social standing to help. Not everyone in the high courts was happy. An aristocrat named Shūzan Tōki showed disdain for him. Tōki said Masanobu was not a "born court painter." This means he did not come from a high court family.

The Kanō school became very powerful in Japan. It stayed the main painting style for a long time. This lasted for over 400 years. The school stayed strong until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Masanobu's son was named Kanō Motonobu. Motonobu took over as the head of the school. He is linked to the distinct Kanō style. The family legacy grew much larger because of him.
