He was known as a great master of traditional painting. Some people call him a virtuoso. This means he had amazing skill. He lived through a time of big changes in Japan. The country was moving from a feudal system to a modern state. Kyōsai was the son of a samurai. His art was full of energy and wild spirit. He was different from many other artists of his time.

Kyōsai learned to paint in a few different ways. First, he worked with an artist named Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Later, he studied in the formal Kanō school. His teacher was Maemura Tōwa. This teacher gave him the nickname "The Painting Demon." However, Kyōsai did not want to follow strict rules. He preferred the freedom of the popular school of art. He used many different styles for his work. He drew things from nature and old folklore. He also painted religious subjects like the goddess Kwannon.

Kyōsai was a very famous caricaturist. A caricature is a funny drawing of a person. He used these drawings to talk about politics. This was a very bold thing to do. He made a long scroll called "The battle of the farts." This was a caricature about the political changes in Japan. Because of his drawings, he had trouble with the law. The authorities arrested him three times. He was even sent to prison by the shogunate.

In 1874, Kyōsai helped create something very special. He worked with Kanagaki Robun to make a magazine. It was called E-shimbun Nippon-chi. This is considered the first manga magazine. It was influenced by a British magazine called Japan Punch. The drawings in the magazine were very simple. It did not become popular and lasted only three issues. Kyōsai was born in 1831 and died in 1889. He lived a life that was as wild as his art.
