He lived during a time of great change. Japan was moving from old ways to new ways. Kyōsai was the son of a samurai. He learned art in a formal school. His teacher gave him a nickname. It was "The Painting Demon."

Kyōsai did not like strict rules. He loved the freedom of popular art. He was a master of caricatures. These are funny drawings that poke fun at people. He used these drawings to talk about politics. This work led to trouble with the police. He was arrested three times.

In 1874, he helped make a new magazine. It was called E-shimbun Nippon-chi. It is known as the first manga magazine. It had a very simple style. The magazine only lasted for three issues.

Kyōsai painted many other things too. He drew nature and old stories. He also painted religious art. His work was wild and full of life. Many people think he was a great artist. You can see his work in big museums today. Even a crater on Mercury is named for him.
