He lived during the Edo period. He was a famous creator of ukiyo-e. This is a style of woodblock prints and paintings. Most artists of his time drew actors or famous people. Hokusai changed this by focusing on landscapes, plants, and animals. He wanted to show the beauty of the world.

His work helped change art in Europe too. Famous painters like Claude Monet studied his style. This movement of Japanese art in Europe was called Japonisme.

Hokusai was a very busy worker. He began painting when he was only six years old. He worked as a woodcarver apprentice starting at age 14. Later, he joined the studio of the artist Katsukawa Shunshō. Hokusai learned to master the ukiyo-e style there. He eventually became an independent artist. He used many different names throughout his life. He used at least thirty different names!

These names often changed when his artistic style changed too. He produced over 30,000 different paintings, sketches, and prints.

One way Hokusai made art was through woodblock printing. He worked closely with skilled blockcutters. He even wrote letters to them about his specific style. He wanted the eyes and noses to look exactly right.

He also created the Hokusai Manga. This was a series of twelve volumes of random drawings. These books showed thousands of objects, animals, and people. They were meant to be helpful art manuals for students. They also helped him earn money.

Many of Hokusai's best works came later in his life. In the 1830s, he made the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. This series includes the famous print The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

He also made a series called One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji. This was a very important landscape picture book. He once painted a huge portrait of Daruma. This painting was 200 square meters in size! He used a broom and buckets of ink to do it.
