He is best known for his work in Noh theater. Noh is a special kind of traditional Japanese drama. Zeami's father, Kan'ami, was a skilled actor who led a theater troupe. Zeami learned the art of performance from his father at a very young age. He was known for being a highly skilled and attractive actor. His talent helped him gain the attention of powerful people in Japan. This allowed him to turn his passion for acting into a lifelong career.

Zeami followed a very careful way of writing his plays. He would first choose a topic for his story. Next, he would decide on the structure of the play. Finally, he would write the lyrics to finish the work. He mixed many different things into his writing to make it special. He used themes from Zen Buddhism and ancient poetry from Japan and China. He also used stories like The Tale of the Heike. Experts think he wrote somewhere between 30 and 50 plays. Some other people believe he may have written as many as 60.

Zeami's life changed a lot because of the Shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Yoshimitsu was a very powerful leader and a patron of the arts. He was impressed by the theater troupe and began to support them. Because of this connection, Zeami received a very special education. A statesman named Nijo Yoshimoto taught him about literature, poetry, and philosophy. This was very unusual for an actor during that time. Most actors came from lower classes and did not get much schooling. This education helped Zeami become a great writer and thinker.

Zeami also wrote many important books about the art of theater. He wrote 21 different treatises, which are long essays or books. These writings explained how actors should move, sing, and act. One of his most famous books is called Fushikaden. This book is very important because it is one of the oldest works on drama in Japan. He also wrote a book called Kakyo about spiritual beauty. He wanted to help other actors learn the best ways to perform. These books were meant for a small group of fellow actors to study.

Later in his life, Zeami faced some very difficult challenges. A new leader named Ashikaga Yoshinori became the Shōgun in 1429. Yoshinori was not a fan of Zeami's style of drama. Because of a disagreement about who should lead the theater troupe, Zeami was sent into exile. Exile means being sent away from your home as a punishment. He was sent to live on Sado Island in 1434. Even while living far away, he continued to write his works. Zeami eventually returned to mainland Japan and died in 1443.
