He wrote stories for two main types of theater. One was jōruri, which is a form of puppet theater called bunraku. The other was kabuki, which uses live actors on a stage. His plays explored the deep feelings of the human heart. He often wrote about the passions and obsessions people feel. This made his stories feel very real to his audience.

Chikamatsu wrote many different kinds of plays. He wrote about 70 jidaimono, which are historical romances. He also wrote 24 sewamono, which are domestic tragedies. These domestic plays are about the lives of regular people. Today, people think these domestic plays are his best work. One famous example is The Love Suicides at Amijima from 1721. Another important play is The Courier for Hell from 1711. He also wrote a play called The Battles of Coxinga in 1715.

We do not know exactly when or where Chikamatsu was born. He was born into a samurai family named Sugimori. His father, Sugimori Nobuyoshi, was a medical doctor for a leader. Later, his father became a rōnin, which is a masterless samurai. Between 1664 and 1670, Chikamatsu moved to the capital city of Kyoto. He worked as a page for a noble family there. He even published a haiku poem in 1671 during this time.

Chikamatsu became a well-known playwright around 1683. This happened after he wrote a puppet play about the Soga brothers.

He later moved from Kyoto to Osaka around 1705 or 1706. He moved to be closer to the Takemoto-za puppet theater. He worked there as a staff playwright until he died. In total, experts have verified 130 plays written by him. Some people think he wrote 15 more early kabuki plays. He died on January 6, 1725, in either Osaka or Amagasaki.

His stories are still very important in art today. Many people study his work to understand human nature. Some of his plays have even been made into movies. For example, Kenji Mizoguchi made a film in 1954 called Chikamatsu Monogatari. Other filmmakers used his stories for movies in 1969 and 1978. You can even see his name in modern stories. A character in the show Naruto is named after him. A character in Digimon is also named Monzaemon to honor him.
