Taiga drama is a special type of television series in Japan. These shows tell grand stories about history over a full year. Each series is a huge project for the NHK network. They usually air every Sunday at 8:00pm on NHK General TV. People can also watch them on Saturday afternoons. Other channels like NHK BS and NHK World Premium show them too. Many viewers in Japan see these dramas as very prestigious.

Making these shows is a very big job. They cost a lot of money to produce. A new team of writers and directors works on each series. Often, the story comes from a famous novel. For example, the show Fūrin Kazan is based on a book called The Samurai Banner of Furin Kazan. Before they start filming, the team finishes one-third of the scripts. They might change the rest of the story based on what the audience thinks. This helps them connect with the people watching at home.

The history of these shows began many years ago. The very first taiga drama was called Hana no Shōgai. It started in 1963 and was shown in black and white. It starred the kabuki actor Onoe Shoroku II and Chikage Awashima. Since then, many different eras of history have been explored. Some shows focus on famous leaders or important events. The shows change as time goes on and new technology arrives.

There are many famous series in this long history. One popular show was Dokuganryū Masamune in 1987. It had a high rating of 39.7%. Another successful show was Takeda Shingen in 1988. It reached a rating of 39.2%. Even though these shows are very special, viewership ratings have gone down lately. For example, the 2024 series Hikaru Kimi e had a rating of 10.7%. New shows like Brothers in Arms are planned for 2026.

These dramas help people feel connected to the past. They bring old stories to life with actors and beautiful sets. Sometimes, the places used in the shows stay important for a long time. The set for the 1993 show Ryūkyū no Kaze is now a park in Okinawa. This allows people to visit a piece of the story. By watching these shows, people learn about the people who lived in Japan long ago. They turn history into something everyone can enjoy together.
