These shows tell stories about history. Each series lasts for one full year. They air on Sunday nights at 8:00pm. Making these shows costs a lot of money.

A new team makes each show. This team includes writers and directors. Sometimes, the story comes from a novel. For example, Fūrin Kazan is based on a book. Before they start filming, they write many scripts. They often change the rest of the story based on what people think.

Many people in Japan see these shows as very grand. They are a big part of culture. The first show was called Hana no Shōgai. It started in 1963. It was shown in black and white. Today, people can watch them on many different channels. Some shows are even set in different places. The set for Ryūkyū no Kaze is now a park in Okinawa.
