It started on April 1, 1963. Many German states worked together to build it. They wanted a public station for everyone.

Today, the station is based in Mainz. It is a nonprofit group. This means it does not work to make a profit. Most people in Germany pay a monthly fee to help it run. This fee is about 18.36 euros. The station also gets money from ads.

ZDF makes many kinds of shows. Some shows tell the news. Other shows are for fun, like the show Wetten, dass..? It has been on for a long time. The station also has small cartoon friends. Their names are the Mainzelmännchen. They appear on the screen between shows. They were made when the station first started. ZDF also has other channels. One is called ZDFneo for young people. Another is ZDFinfo for shows about real life. The station sends out signals through cables and satellites. This lets people across Europe watch it.
