It was started in 1947. Two men, John Seymour Chaloner and Rudolf Augstein, founded it. Augstein was the leader for many years. He stayed in that job until he died in 2002.

The magazine is famous for investigative journalism. This means writers search for deep truths and secrets. They often find out when leaders do bad things. This is called uncovering scandals. For example, they found big secrets in 1962 and the 1980s. These stories helped change how the government worked.

Many people read the magazine. In 2022, about 724,000 copies were sold every week. It is one of the largest magazines in Europe. It also has a website called Spiegel Online. The website and the paper share the same name.

Sometimes, the magazine has problems. In 2018, they found a writer made up stories. He invented facts and people in his work. The magazine also had a mistake about a girl in Greece in 2022. They had to take those stories back. Even so, it remains a very important news source.
