It was started in 1946 in Hamburg. British forces helped found the paper. At first, it shared news from a British view. By 1947, it gave two views on big topics. One view was British and one was German. Axel Springer bought the paper in 1953.

The paper has many parts. From 2004 to 2019, it had a small version called Welt Kompakt. This was made for younger readers. It also has a monthly business magazine. In 2018, a TV channel changed its name to Welt.
