It was started in 1855 by Arthur B. Sleigh. At first, it was called The Daily Telegraph and Courier. It was very cheap to buy. Later, a man named Lord Burnham made it even more popular. He wanted it to be the best and cheapest paper.

One goal was to report on science and new inventions. This helped people understand how new things changed their lives.

The paper has found many big news stories. A reporter named Clare Hollingworth found a major story about World War II. In 2009, the paper shared news about how politicians spent money. This led to many leaders leaving their jobs. The paper also has a long history of puzzles. During the war, it used crosswords to find smart code-breakers. People had to solve them very fast to show their skill.

Ownership of the paper has changed many times. In 2026, a German company called Axel Springer SE bought it. They paid £575 million for the group. They want to keep the paper's style while growing it globally.
