The Daily Telegraph is a famous British newspaper.

It is known as a "newspaper of record" in the United Kingdom. This means people look to it for important and official news. The paper is politically conservative and supports the Conservative Party. It is published in London by the Telegraph Media Group. The paper is sent to people all over the United Kingdom and the world. It has a long history of sharing stories that change how people see the world.

Learning how the paper works shows its many different roles. It reports on big events like science, fashion, and new inventions. One way it works is by finding "scoops," which are big news stories found before anyone else. For example, a reporter named Clare Hollingworth found a major story about the start of the Second World War. In 2009, the paper shared news about how politicians spent their money. This led to many leaders leaving their jobs.

The paper even used puzzles to help during the war. It used a crossword competition to find smart people to help break secret codes.

The story of the paper began in June 1855. A man named Colonel Arthur B. Sleigh started it as The Daily Telegraph and Courier. He actually started it to express a personal grievance. The first edition cost only 2d and had four pages. It was not a big success at first, so Joseph Moses Levy took over. He wanted to make it a cheaper option than other London papers. His son, Lord Burnham, later made it very popular by calling it the largest and cheapest paper in the world.

Many different people and companies have owned the newspaper over the years. In 1928, the paper was sold to William Berry and his partners. Later, a Canadian businessman named Conrad Black took control in 1986. Ownership changed again in 2004 when the Barclay brothers bought a controlling interest. In March 2026, a German company called Axel Springer SE bought the Telegraph Media Group. They paid £575 million for the company. This was a big deal after a previous attempt to buy it by RedBird Capital Partners failed in 2025.

You can see how the paper has changed with our modern world. It moved from paper to the internet with the launch of its website in 1995. The paper also uses new ways to share news, like podcasts and videos. It even changed its offices to a new "hub and spoke" layout in central London. This helps journalists create news for both print and online readers at the same time. Just like the news you see on a phone or computer, the Telegraph keeps moving to stay connected to its readers.
