It is owned by the Axel Springer publishing group. Many people call it a newspaper of record in Germany. This means it is seen as a very important source for news. The paper describes its own viewpoint as liberal cosmopolitan. However, many people consider its stance to be conservative. It competes with other large papers like Süddeutsche Zeitung and Frankfurter Rundschau.

There are many ways to read this news. The main paper is a large broadsheet. From 2004 to 2019, it published a smaller version called Welt Kompakt. This 32-page version was made for younger readers.

The paper is also linked to a Sunday publication called Welt am Sonntag. It even has a monthly business magazine called Bilanz. In 2018, a television channel changed its name to Welt too. You can find this news in more than 130 different countries.

The history of the paper began in 1946. It was founded in the city of Hamburg. British occupying forces started the paper at that time. They wanted to create a high-quality newspaper like The Times. In 1947, the paper changed how it shared opinions. It began providing two different articles on big questions. One article showed a British view and the other showed a German view. Axel Springer bought the newspaper in 1953.

Numbers show how the paper has changed over the years. During the occupation period, it reached a peak of about one million readers. In 1993, the circulation was 209,677 copies. By 2014, the average circulation was about 180,000.

The paper also gave out a special book prize from 1999 to 2019. This was the Welt-Literaturpreis. It was named after Willy Haas, who started a literary section in 1925. Famous authors like Haruki Murakami and Salman Rushdie have won this prize.

Like many large news groups, Die Welt works with others. It was a founding member of the European Dailies Alliance. It also works with newspapers in the UK, France, and Spain.

However, the paper has faced many hard jobs and criticisms. Some people say it published articles that doubted climate change. Others criticized it for sharing wrong facts during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2008, the paper was even banned in Egypt. This happened after it published certain cartoons.
