This means the paper often supports civil rights and peace initiatives.

The way the paper works is through careful reporting and many different opinions. It publishes news, book reviews, and investigations into how things are run. It also has many opinion columns written by regular writers. The paper uses smaller headlines and smaller print than other big newspapers in Israel. It does not use as many pictures as other papers. Instead, it uses more space for deep political analysis. This helps readers understand the reasons behind big events. The English edition is especially popular with people watching news from outside Israel.

The history of the paper goes back over a hundred years. It was first published in 1918 with support from the British military government. In 1919, a group of businessmen started it as Hadashot Ha'aretz. This name means "News of the Land." Later, the name was simply shortened to Haaretz. It was first printed in Jerusalem. The paper even closed for a short time because it ran out of money. It reopened in Tel Aviv in 1923 under an editor named Moshe Glickson.

He led the paper for 15 years.

Ownership of the paper has changed many times since it began. For a long time, the Schocken family were the only owners. Salman Schocken bought the paper in December 1935. His son, Gershom Schocken, became the chief editor in 1939. Gershom held that job until he died in 1990. In 2006, the family sold a 25% stake to a German publisher. A businessman named Leonid Nevzlin bought a 20% stake in 2011. By December 2019, the Schocken family had bought back most of the shares. Today, the family owns 75% of the company.

Reading Haaretz is a way to see many different viewpoints. It is known for being critical of the government. In 2024, the Israeli government ordered a boycott of the paper. This happened after the publisher, Amos Schocken, made some strong comments. The government even banned its officials from using the paper. This news was discussed by groups like the Committee to Protect Journalists. Some people say the paper is very sophisticated and highly educated. Others have argued about its accuracy or its political views. It remains a major part of the news in Israel.
