Japan has many wonderful ways to tell stories on stage. These traditions include dance, music, and spoken drama. Some of these forms are among the oldest in the whole world.

Noh is a very old spiritual drama. It uses symbols from Buddhism and Shinto to tell mythic tales. Because it was very serious, it was often performed for rich people. A funny partner called Kyogen was played alongside Noh. Kyogen uses silly jokes and physical comedy to connect the deep themes to the everyday world. Until the year 1430, both men and women were allowed to perform in these plays.

Another amazing tradition is Bunraku, which is a type of puppetry. These puppets are quite large and tall.

Puppeteers move the dolls right in front of the audience. The people moving the legs and hands wear all black to stay hidden. However, the main puppeteer who moves the head wears a colorful costume. Music and chanting are also very important in these shows. The person playing the music is often the leader of the whole production.

Kabuki is another famous style that uses intense dance and music. It often features costumes that look exactly like they did in the past.

Kabuki was created to be different from the calm and serious Noh plays. A person named Izumo no Okuni is said to have performed the first kabuki play in 1603. She performed on the dried-up banks of the Kamo River in Kyoto. Over time, kabuki became a very set art form. Actors work hard to keep the traditions and costume designs the same as they were centuries ago.

In the Edo period, a spoken drama called Rakugo was also very popular. There were many different types of theaters during this time. By the end of the Edo period, there were several hundred theaters in Japan. Some people even went to see Rakugo at festivals. Today, Japan's theater has changed even more with modern styles. You can see experimental plays that use natural acting. You can also see shinpa, which means "new school" theatre. These shows tell more contemporary and realistic stories than the old styles.

Modern Japan also loves musicals and shows based on popular stories. Some musicals are even based on manga or video games. These are called 2.5D musicals. They use special light effects called projection mapping for their backgrounds.

Tokyo is one of the biggest centers for theater in the world. About 3,000 performances happen there every single year. You can see everything from old classics to new musical adaptations. This mix of old and new makes Japanese theater very special to see.
