It includes many different kinds of art. Some shows use dance, like ballet. Others use singing, like opera. You might see a modern musical or a funny pantomime. Some music is called incidental music. This music plays while actors speak. It can also help separate one scene from the next.

All this music is written in a special book. This book is called a score. It shows the musical notes. It also shows the lyrics, which are the words to the songs.

There are many ways music works in a show. It can help an actor feel a certain way. It can also set a mood for the audience. In the past, music played during the action. Sometimes it played as an afterpiece after the play ended.

Composers can write new music just for one play. They can also take old music and change it. This is called arranging the music. This helps the music fit the story perfectly. It makes the whole performance feel complete and special.

Music has been part of theatre for a very long time.

In ancient Greece, people used songs called choric odes. These were chanted and danced between parts of a play. Only small pieces of that music still exist today. Later, in the 16th century, people in Florence tried something new. They wanted to bring back Greek drama with singing. This led to the birth of modern opera. Many famous writers later used these old styles in their own plays.

William Shakespeare used many types of music in his plays.

He used fanfares to introduce important characters. He used magic music for special moments, like a lullaby. He also used character music to show if someone was sad or happy. Some music was used just to create an atmosphere. By the 18th century, music was part of almost every show in Europe. Theatres even built special areas called orchestra pits. These pits gave a home to the musicians.

Music is a global part of telling stories.

Classic theatre in Asia, from India to Japan, relies on music. Dramatic rituals in sub-Saharan Africa use it too. Indigenous peoples in the Americas also use music in their traditions. In the West, music appears in many forms. This includes melodrama, vaudeville, and even rock musicals. Whether it is a big opera or a small variety show, music helps us feel the story.
