Drama is a special way to tell stories through performance.

People can perform these stories on a stage, on the radio, or on television. Some drama uses only the movement of the body, which is called mime. Other types use music to help tell the tale. In an opera, the actors sing the whole story. In a ballet, dancers use their movements to show emotions and characters.

The word drama comes from a Greek word meaning "deed" or "act." You might see two masks used to represent drama. One mask stands for comedy, and the other stands for tragedy.

Creating drama is a team effort that requires many people working together.

Actors perform on a stage in front of an audience. This means the creators and the viewers are part of a shared experience. Some performers use improvisation to make the drama happen. In improvisation, the actors do not have a script before they start. They make up the story and the words right in front of the audience. They respond to each other and the people watching to decide what happens next.

Western drama began a very long time ago in classical Greece.

Most of these early plays were made in the city of Athens. Dramatists in Athens created three main types of drama. These were tragedy, comedy, and the satyr play. These plays were often part of big contests held during festivals. These festivals were held to celebrate a god named Dionysus. A man named Thespis was a very important figure in this history. He was the first person to act as a character instead of just singing.

Ancient Greek drama has a very long and detailed history.

Tragic writers like Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides wrote many famous plays. Aeschylus wrote "The Persians," which is the oldest surviving drama. In the 5th century BC, writers competed in contests called "agon." Tragic writers often had to present a group of four plays called a tetralogy. Later, the Romans encountered Greek drama and expanded it. Roman theatre became very large and sophisticated. Roman writers like Plautus and Terence wrote comedies that are still known today.

Drama has changed and grown throughout many different eras.

In the Middle Ages, churches used drama to tell stories from the Bible. These were called liturgical dramas. During the time of William Shakespeare, people often called plays "games." The person who wrote the plays was called a "playwright" instead of a dramatist. Today, we use the word "drama" in a more narrow way. It can describe serious plays in movies or on television. From ancient Greece to modern TV, drama remains a way to share human stories.
