Livius Andronicus was a very important writer from the Roman Republic. He is often called the father of Roman drama and Latin literature. This is because he was the first man of letters to write in Latin. He was a poet, an actor, and a writer of plays. His work helped bring Greek stories into the Latin language. This changed how people in Rome shared and enjoyed stories.

He worked in many ways to share stories through writing and acting. First, he made Latin translations of Greek works like the Odyssey. He used these translations to teach students in a school he founded. He also wrote his own plays for the stage. These included tragedies, which are sad stories, and comedies, which are funny. His comedies used characters in Greek costumes. Romans called this style comoedia palliata, which means "cloaked comedy" because of the Greek cloak called a pallium.

We do not know much about his early life in Tarentum. He was a highly educated Greek man. It is believed he was bought as a slave by Roman nobles. He worked as a teacher for a noble family. Because of his great intelligence, he became a freedman. This means he was given his liberty by his master. This master was part of the Livia family.

Historians use different dates to talk about his life. Cicero says his first performance in Rome was in 240 BC. This was the year before a poet named Ennius was born. Another writer, Livy, says Andronicus wrote a special hymn in 207 BC. This hymn was for twenty-seven girls to sing for the goddess Juno. Because of his success, he received public honors in Rome. His professional group of writers and actors met in the Temple of Minerva.

His work connected the Greek and Roman worlds through art. His translation of the Odyssey was called the Odusia. He worked hard to keep the artistic quality of the original Greek poem. He even changed some phrases to fit Roman ideas. For example, he changed "equal to the gods" to a Latin phrase meaning "greatest and of first rank." He also helped create a new way for actors to use dialogue. This helped set the stage for all the Latin writers who came after him.
