Naevius wrote many different kinds of stories. He wrote comedies, which are funny plays. He also wrote tragedies, which are serious plays. He was famous for a style called Palliata Comoedia. This was a way of adapting Greek comedies for Roman audiences. He also created a new kind of play called fabula praetexta. These were national dramas about Roman heroes or events. One such play was about the childhood of Romulus and Remus. Another was called Clastidium, which celebrated a Roman victory.

His life was full of big changes and hard times. Naevius served as a soldier during the First Punic War. This war happened before the year 241 BC. He began his career as a writer around 235 BC. He wrote plays for about thirty years in Rome. However, he used his comedies to make jokes about powerful families. He made fun of the Metellus family on stage. This angered the leaders of Rome very much.

Because of his jokes, Naevius faced serious trouble. He was sent to prison for a while. He wrote two plays in jail to apologize for his rudeness. The tribunes eventually helped set him free. But he faced more trouble later on. He was sent away from Rome to a place called Utica in Tunisia. This was known as his exile. While in Utica, he wrote his own epitaph, which is a poem for a grave. He died there around 204 BC.

We do not have all of his books today. Most of his work is lost to time. We only have small pieces called fragments. These pieces were saved by ancient scholars who wrote about grammar. Even these small bits show his talent. He wrote a long epic poem called Bellum Punicum. This poem told the story of the First Punic War. It mixed real history with old myths about Aeneas. His work helped shape how later Romans wrote their own stories.
