Poetics (Aristotle)

philosophy religion Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Aristotle wrote a very important book called the Poetics. This work is the oldest surviving book about how to write drama. It is also the first big book to focus only on literary theory. The word "poetics" comes from a Greek term for making or creating. Aristotle looked at many ways to tell a story. He studied verse, lyric poetry, and epic poetry. He also looked at different kinds of drama, like comedy and tragedy.

Aristotle believed that all these types of art use mimesis. Mimesis is a way of imitating life or actions. Even though they all imitate life, they use different tools. Some use musical rhythm, melody, or special patterns of speech. They also differ in how they tell a story or how good their characters are. The book we have today focuses mostly on drama. Specifically, it spends a lot of time talking about tragedy.

In a tragedy, the plot is the most important part. The plot is the way a story is organized. Aristotle said a good plot should show a change from good to bad or bad to good. A very tragic story might show a good person facing bad luck because of a mistake. He called this mistake hamartia. The story should also make the audience feel pity and fear. This emotional release is called catharsis.

Characters in a tragedy must follow certain rules to feel real. Aristotle said they should be good people, but not perfect. They must also be appropriate for their roles and act in a way that makes sense. This is called being consistent. If a character acts in a way that is unexpected, the audience might get confused. The characters' words and actions should also show their thoughts. This helps the audience understand the meaning of the story.

Aristotle also thought poetry was different from writing history. History tells us about things that actually happened in the past. It deals with specific events that might happen by chance. Poetry is different because it deals with what might happen. It uses logic to show how one event leads to another. Because of this, Aristotle thought poetry was more philosophical than history. It helps us understand universal truths about life.
