Have you ever wondered how we sort all the books in a library?

We use special groups called literary genres. A genre is a category for stories, poems, or plays. People use many ways to decide a genre. They might look at the length of the writing. They might look at the tone or the mood. Some genres use prose, which is writing like a normal story. Others use poetry, which often has a special rhythm.

These groups help us know what to expect when we read.

Genres work by moving from big groups to small ones. A large group is called a genre. Inside that group, you can find smaller groups called subgenres. Think about the genre of the novel. A detective novel is a subgenre of the novel. You can even find a "hard-boiled" detective novel inside that group.

Some writing can even mix different genres together. For example, satire or allegory can appear in many different types of books. This makes the world of reading very flexible and interesting.

People have been studying these groups for a very long time. The idea began with a thinker named Aristotle. He used ideas from biology to sort literary kinds. He called these kinds "species."

In his books, *Rhetoric* and *Poetics*, he talked about many types. He listed the epic, tragedy, and comedy as parts of poetry. He also studied different kinds of speeches. He divided them by their purpose, like praising someone or arguing a point. This helped people organize their thoughts about writing.

Many different people added to these ideas over the years. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Romantic movement changed things. People then felt that every book should be unique. They wanted to escape from wars and hard times in the real world.

Later, in 1957, a Canadian scholar named Northrop Frye wrote *Anatomy of Criticism*. He created a system to describe how genres work. He looked at how a hero relates to the laws of nature. He also grouped works by who they were for, like drama or lyric poetry.

Today, we still use these categories to enjoy our favorite stories. We can find poetry with short forms like haiku or sonnets. We can find prose in notebooks, novellas, or short stories.

We even have ways to sort books by age. Some are for children, while others are for adults. We can also sort them by how they are made, like graphic novels or picture books. Even though the rules for genres can change, they still help us find the stories we love.
