Artists use satire to show the mistakes or bad habits of people and groups. This might include governments, large companies, or even whole societies. While it often uses humor, its main goal is to be helpful. It uses wit to draw attention to problems so that things might improve. By showing what is wrong, satire acts as a way to encourage change.

There are many tools that satirists use to make their point.

They often use irony, which is when someone says one thing but means another. They also use parody, which is imitating a style to make fun of it. Exaggeration is another common trick to make a flaw look huge. Some writers use comparison or analogy to show how silly a situation is. They might even use a double entendre, which is a word with two meanings. These tools help the artist show the truth in a clever way.

History shows us that the word satire has interesting roots.

The word comes from the Latin word "satur." This word meant "full," like a "full dish of various kinds of fruits." Some people once thought it came from the Greek figure called a satyr. However, a scholar named Isaac Casaubon argued against this in the 17th century. In ancient times, a person named Quintilian saw it as a strict way of writing. Over time, the word grew to cover many different kinds of art.

Satire can be categorized into different styles based on how it feels.

One style is Horatian satire, named after the Roman writer Horace. This type is gentle and uses light humor to show human silliness. Another style is Juvenalian satire, named for the writer Juvenal. This style is much sharper, angry, and even a bit mean. It attacks people in power to demand that society fixes its evils. There is also Menippean satire, which is another way to group these ideas.

It is important to know the difference between satire and simple teasing.

Teasing, or "sfottò," is just making fun of how someone looks or acts. It might mock a person's voice or the way they walk. Teasing often makes a person seem more human and likable. Real satire is different because it has a serious moral side. It judges a person's ideas or their use of power. Satire aims to challenge authority rather than just making a quick joke.
