These magazines usually share a mix of fiction and non-fiction. You might find short stories and poems inside their pages. Some magazines even publish serial literature. This is when a long novel is shared in small sections over many issues. Non-fiction parts can include essays or book reviews. Writers might also include interviews or letters. These magazines help people discover new ideas and beautiful language. They are important places for authors to share their best work.

There are many ways these magazines work. Some use non-fiction to offer commentary on culture or the magazine itself. Contributors might write biographical profiles to tell the life story of an author.

In some places, magazines take a very specific shape. In the Russian-speaking world, people created "thick journals." These were very large magazines, often over 200 pages long. A typical issue in the 19th century was 300 to 400 pages. They were called "thick" because of this huge size. They usually came out four times a year or even just three.

Literary magazines have a very long history. Pierre Bayle started the first one in France in 1684.

By the early 1800s, these journals became much more common. In Great Britain, the Edinburgh Review began in 1802. In the United States, the North American Review was founded in 1815. This is the oldest American literary magazine. However, the Yale Review is the oldest one still publishing without stopping. In Argentina, a magazine called La Aljaba started in 1830. It was very special because it was made by and for women.

Many famous names are linked to these publications.

The magazine Poetry, founded in 1912, published T. S. Eliot's first poem. In Argentina, the magazine Martín Fierro helped many writers become famous. This included the great writer Jorge Luis Borges. In Russia, the first thick journal was called Monthly Writings Serving Purpose and Enjoyment. It started in 1755 and was edited by Gerhard Friedrich Müller. These journals helped spread culture across very large areas. They even helped people living far away stay connected to their traditions.

Today, literary magazines still connect readers to the world of art.

They help writers build famous reputations. Some writers, like Steve Almond, became well-known mostly through these magazines. Many prestigious awards, like the Pushcart Prize, honor work found in them. They even provide pieces for famous yearly books like The Best American Short Stories. While print magazines are changing, many new ones now live online. They continue to be a bright spark for new ideas and great storytelling.
