These works are made to entertain or teach young people. They include many different types of writing. Some are picture books for very young readers. Others are young adult fiction for those nearing maturity. Some people include comic books in this group. Others think only books read from start to finish count.

The boundaries between these types are often blurred. Some books are so popular they fit many groups. For example, the Harry Potter series is for children. However, many adults love reading those books too.

Long ago, stories were shared through spoken words. Adults sang songs and told folk tales to children. This was part of a wider oral tradition. Before printing was invented, these spoken stories were the main way. Even after printing became common, many tales were for adults. Later, people adapted these stories for a younger audience. Some books were used to teach the alphabet.

In the 1600s, thinkers like John Locke had new theories. Locke believed a child's mind was a "blank slate." He thought children learned through their senses and experiences. He suggested that "easy pleasant books" could help them learn. He even thought picture books would be useful. In the 1600s, the Puritans also influenced books. They wanted to protect the spiritual lives of children. They published "good godly books" to help them. One famous book from this time was The Pilgrim's Progress. It was written by John Bunyan in 1678.

In 1658, John Amos Comenius published Orbis Pictus in Bohemia. This was the first picture book for young learners. In 1697, Charles Perrault published fairy tales in France. In Italy, Giovanni Francesco Straparola released storybooks in the 1550s. Russia also had early books like the ABC-Book in 1571. The New England Primer was printed by 1691 in America. It helped children learn the alphabet and prayers.

Publishers in England began making books to delight young readers. John Newbery was one important person in this movement. The late 1800s were called the "Golden Age." Many of the classic books we know today were made then. One very famous example is The Adventures of Pinocchio.
