Fantasy literature is a special kind of storytelling. It takes readers to imaginary universes. These worlds might not look like our own. They often have magic and supernatural things. You might see magical creatures living there. Some stories have no real-world locations at all. This genre is part of speculative fiction. It is different from science fiction or horror. Science fiction focuses on science. Horror focuses on scary or macabre themes. Fantasy can be for children or adults.

Many fantasy stories use very specific ideas. Some writers use elements to represent nature. For example, a writer might use fire or water. These elements can become living beings. A man named Paracelsus identified four types. He named gnomes for earth and undines for water. He called air beings sylphs and fire beings salamanders. Many of these names come from old folklore. Talking animals are also very common. These animals often have human qualities. They help tell stories about politics or life.

People have shared these tales for a very long time. Before books, people told stories out loud. Classical myths from Greece and Rome are very old. India has a long tradition of fantasy too. The Panchatantra is a famous collection of fables. Some scholars think it was written around 3rd century BC. It was written in Kashmir. These stories used animals to teach important lessons. The Arabian Nights is another very famous collection. It came from the Middle East. It became popular in the West after 1704.

Many famous stories come from old legends. The Welsh tradition has stories about King Arthur. These are found in a work called the Mabinogion. Norse and Icelandic sagas also inspired many writers. The poem Beowulf is another huge influence. In the 1400s, Sir Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d'Arthur. This book is very important for Arthurian tales. During the Renaissance, many people wrote fairy tales. Giambattista Basile wrote the Pentamerone. This was the first collection of pure fairy tales.
