These entities appear in folklore and old tales. They might show up in historical accounts from long ago. However, science has never shown that they truly exist. Some of these creatures are hybrid beasts. A hybrid is a mix of different animals, like a chimera. Other creatures come from myths and were believed to be real. This includes famous animals like dragons, griffins, and unicorns.

In the classical era, many monsters lived in heroic stories. These creatures helped show how great a hero was. For example, the hero Odysseus faced the Cyclops and Scylla. Perseus had to defeat the monster Medusa. Theseus fought the Minotaur, which was part human and part bull. Heracles worked to kill the many-headed Hydra. Aeneas even had to battle the harpies. These stories used monsters to make the heroes look more powerful.

Many of these creatures appear in art from different places. Some creatures like the centaur or Pegasus are found in Indian art too. Sphinxes are seen as winged lions in Indian art and in North America. In the Middle Ages, animals were very important in art. They were used in jewelry to add humor or majesty. Artists used both real and mythical animals for decoration. They often made their limbs look very intricate and interlaced.

During the Middle Ages, people used animals as allegory. An allegory uses something to represent a bigger idea. For instance, a unicorn represented innocence and purity. Some stories said unicorns were very fast and hard to catch. It was believed a hunter could only catch one using a virgin. In Christian art, animals had special meanings. A dove stood for the Holy Spirit. A lamb stood for Christ.

Dragons were also used to show big ideas in the Middle Ages. They were often linked to the devil or to sin. People thought dragons were larger than all other animals. Some believed they lived in hot places like India or Ethiopia. These dragons were said to slay things just by embracing them. In medieval books called bestiaries, artists did not focus on being exact. They cared more about the moral lessons the animals taught. They wanted to show religious ideas rather than perfect physical looks.
