Dwarfs are supernatural beings from Germanic folklore.

They are often described as human-shaped beings. Many stories say they live in mountains or inside stones. These beings are usually known as very skilled craftsmen. They often make wonderful things for gods or heroes. Some stories say they can even change their shape.

While many people think of them as short, early stories do not always mention their size. Their roles in the stories are often more important than how they look.

There are many different ways these beings act. In some tales, they are friendly to humans. In other stories, they can be quite hostile. Some dwarfs can make themselves invisible using a special cloak. This cloak is called a "Tarnkappe" in Middle High German stories. Other legends say they use lights to lead people off paths. In some places, people believed they lived in underground kitchens. These kitchens might even make the soil more fertile.

This shows how much people wondered about them.

These ideas come from a very long history. The word "dwarf" comes from old Germanic languages. It is related to the Old Norse word "dvergr." Some scholars think the word might be linked to being dizzy. This might mean they were once seen as spirits that caused sickness. Early place names in England also suggest people believed in them. Names like Dwerihouse hint at a connection to underground spaces.

These names show how deep these beliefs went.

Old Norse stories give us many specific names.

There are brothers named Brokkr and Sindri who made famous tools for gods. Another dwarf named Andvari is known for his treasure. Four dwarfs named Norðri, Suðri, Austri, and Vestri are said to hold up the sky. In the Nibelungenlied, a dwarf named Alberich has the strength of twelve men. These names and stories help us understand the different types of dwarfs. Each one has a unique job or power.

Today, we still see these ideas in our world. Many modern books and movies use dwarfs as characters. Authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Terry Pratchett wrote about them. In these modern stories, dwarfs are often different from elves. Even the way we spell the word comes from modern books. Tolkien used the plural "dwarves" in his famous stories. Most people usually use the plural "dwarfs" instead. It is amazing how old legends can live on in new ways.
