These beings appear in Celtic, Slavic, Germanic, and French folklore. Most stories describe them as looking like humans, but their sizes can change. Some fairies are quite tiny, while others can grow to be human size. They are often seen as magical spirits with supernatural powers. Some people even use the word "fairy" to mean something is enchanted. The special place where these beings live is often called Fairyland.

Many different ideas exist about how fairies work and act. In many legends, fairies are known for being tricky or playful. They might lead travelers off their paths using lights called will-o'-the-wisps. Because of this, people used special charms to stay safe. Some people wore their clothes inside out to protect themselves. Others used church bells, food, or a four-leaf clover as charms. In the past, people even blamed fairies for certain illnesses.

People have wondered about the origins of fairies for a long time. There is no single starting point for these stories. Some thinkers believed fairies were once gods or nature spirits. In Christian traditions, some thought they were angels who had fallen from heaven. Other stories suggest they are the spirits of people who have died. One theory even says they might be a prehistoric race of humans. These different beliefs come from many different places and times.

History shows how the idea of the fairy has changed. The word comes from the Old French word "fay." In the 14th century, it began to mean a single being. During the Renaissance, fairies became very popular in literature and art. Later, during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, interest in fairies grew even more. In the United Kingdom, many people became fascinated by these magical creatures. The Celtic Revival also helped make fairies a part of Irish heritage.
