They are often described as having incredible strength or unusual appearances. The word "giant" was first used in a chronicle by Robert of Gloucester in 1297. This name comes from the Gigantes of ancient Greek mythology.

In many fairy tales, giants are seen as scary or dimwitted monsters. However, modern writers like Roald Dahl show them as smart and friendly. Some stories even describe half-giants who belong to human families.

Many different cultures have created their own unique giant stories.

In Greek myths, the Gigantes were children of the sky and earth. They fought the gods in a great battle called the Gigantomachy. In the Aztec tradition, the Quinametzin were giants who built Teotihuacan. Bulgarian myths tell of ispolini, who lived in mountains and fought dragons.

In Chile, some legends say giants are so long they reach from mountains to the sea. These tales help people explain the massive world around them.

Religious texts also contain many accounts of giant beings.

The Hebrew Bible mentions the Nephilim, who are sometimes translated as giants. There is also the famous story of Goliath, a man who fought David. Different ancient records give different heights for Goliath. Some say he was about 7 to 8 feet tall. Others suggest he might have been over 10 feet tall. In Jainism, giants lived during a specific time called the age of descending purity.

During this time, the height of all living things slowly decreased.

Throughout history, people have often mistaken large bones for giant remains.

This is called proto-scientific study. For example, the historian Herodotus wrote about finding a very large body in Tegea. Pliny described a giant skeleton found in Crete after an earthquake. Many people likely thought these were fossils of ancient animals like mammoths. In 1613, finding massive bones in France caused a big debate among doctors.

Even in America, the discovery of the Claverack Giant led to serious study. These bones helped people wonder about the history of life.

Giant stories connect to how humans understand nature and themselves.

Some myths use giants to explain how the earth was shaped. In Ireland, Fionn mac Cumhaill is said to have built the Giant's Causeway. In America, tales of Paul Bunyan say his blue ox, Babe, created lakes with its footprints.

These stories turn big, natural things into amazing adventures. Whether they are monsters or heroes, giants help us explore big ideas. They remind us of how much there is to discover in our world.
