Many people see her as the personification of the Earth itself. She is often called the "all-mother" because she nourishes everything. Some ancient writers even called her "pammētōr," which means the mother of all. She was seen as a source of life for humans and gods alike. This makes her a central part of how the Greeks understood the world.

In many stories, Gaia plays a major role in how the world began. After a state called Chaos, Gaia arose to be the seat of the immortals.

She brought forth many things to fill the world. She had the mountains, called the Ourea, and the sea, called Pontus. She also gave birth to her equal, Uranus, who represented the sky. Together, they helped create the structure of the universe. These stories explain how the different parts of nature came to be.

Gaia had many famous children through her union with Uranus. They were known as the Titans, such as Oceanus, Rhea, and Cronos.

She also bore the Cyclopes, who were one-eyed beings. Another group of children were the Hecatonchires, who had many arms and heads. Some of these children caused great trouble in the myths. Gaia even helped the god Zeus by taking care of him when he was a baby. She gave him a stone to hide his true identity from his father.

There are many specific names and details about her family tree. With Pontus, the sea, she had many sea gods like Nereus and Ceto.

From the blood of Uranus, she produced the Giants and the Erinyes. In some Roman stories, her equivalent is named Terra. The name Gaia has roots that go back to very old languages. Some scholars think the word might come from even older, unknown sources. These details show how much thought went into her character.

People in ancient Greece treated Gaia with great respect. They used her name when making serious promises called oaths.

They believed she could hear them if they broke a promise. They also offered sacrifices to her, sometimes using a black lamb. This shows that she was a part of their daily lives and beliefs. Even today, her stories help us understand how ancient people viewed the earth.
