Hestia was a very important goddess in ancient Greek religion.

She was the goddess of the hearth and the home. Her name means "hearth," "fireplace," or "altar."

The hearth was the center of a house. It provided warmth and a place to cook food. Because of this, Hestia represented the family and the community. She also stood for the idea of a stable society.

In Greek myths, Hestia had a very difficult start to life. She was the firstborn child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Cronus feared his children might take his power. Because of this fear, he swallowed Hestia and her siblings. Later, the youngest sibling Zeus escaped with help from Rhea. Zeus grew up and forced Cronus to let the other children out.

This made Hestia one of the Twelve Olympians. She was part of the new generation of gods.

Even though she was a powerful goddess, Hestia lived a quiet life. She chose to remain a virgin goddess and never married. Both Poseidon and Apollo once wanted to marry her. Hestia went to Zeus and swore an oath to stay single.

She spent her time tending the eternal fires of Olympus. Some say she stayed at the hearth while other gods went on adventures. This kept her from joining many famous stories or processions. She was a steady and calm presence in the Greek world.

People showed Hestia great respect through special traditions. At home, she received the very first part of every sacrifice. In big cities, she had an official sanctuary called a prytaneum.

A public flame burned there to represent the community. When people started a new colony, they carried a flame from the old city to the new one. This linked the new settlement to its home. This practice helped keep the connection between different places alive.

Many different cultures had ideas similar to Hestia's role. The Romans had a goddess named Vesta who served a similar purpose.

Vesta also looked after the public and domestic hearths. Other writers linked Hestia to different deities in other lands. For example, the historian Herodotus connected her to a Scythian god named Tabiti. Even the Zoroastrian holy fire was sometimes linked to her. These connections show how important the idea of a sacred fire was to many people.
