Ancient Greek religion was a collection of many beliefs and stories. It was not one single organized religion like we see today. Instead, the Greeks had many local customs and shared shrines. They did not even have a specific word for "religion."

People focused more on what they did than what they believed. This included special ceremonies and sacrifices to honor the gods.

These practices spread across many places. They were found in mainland Greece and on many islands. They even reached places like Sicily and southern Italy.

Most Greeks recognized twelve major Olympian gods and goddesses. Zeus was the king of these gods and ruled the sky. He used thunder and lightning to show his power.

Poseidon ruled the sea and caused earthquakes. Hades ruled the Underworld, which was the realm of the dead.

Other gods had specific jobs or rules over nature. Aphrodite controlled love, while Helios controlled the sun. Some gods were even tied to specific cities. Athena was linked to Athens, and Apollo was linked to Delphi.

The gods were often seen as having human forms. They could also change into animals or natural things. Even though they were immortal, they were not always good. They could have human feelings and even make mistakes.

Sometimes gods would even compete against each other. For example, different gods supported different sides in the Trojan War. The gods also had to obey fate, known as the Moirai. Even Zeus could not change what fate had decided.

Greek mythology is filled with amazing stories and creatures. These myths told how gods and heroes interacted. Some stories followed heroes like Heracles or Odysseus.

There were many different types of beings in these stories. Some were half-human, like the centaurs or satyrs. Others were monsters, such as the one-eyed Cyclopes.

Some myths even explained how the world began. One story said everything started with a state called Chaos. From Chaos, other gods like Gaia and Eros were born.

Beliefs about the afterlife were also very important. Many Greeks believed the dead went to an underworld ruled by Hades. Some people thought there were special places like Elysium for good people.

Others believed in reincarnation, which is being born again. A few thinkers, like Epicurus, believed the soul simply dissolved at death. These ideas were part of a very large system of thought. These ancient stories and beliefs still influence art and stories today.
