An oracle is a person or a thing that gives wise advice. Many people believe oracles can see the future through divine inspiration. This practice is a form of divination, which is seeking knowledge of the unknown. The word comes from the Latin word ōrāre, meaning "to speak." This refers to the priest or priestess who says the words. Sometimes, an oracle is the person speaking. Other times, it refers to the holy site itself.

Oracles were seen as portals for gods to speak to people. They were different from seers who read signs in birds or animals. At the famous site of Dodona, priests listened to oak trees. They interpreted the rustling leaves as the voice of Zeus. At other places, like the city of Anariace, people sought answers through sleep. They would sleep in a temple to learn a divine will. This shows how many different ways people found connection to the gods.

History shows that these traditions are very old. In the Near East, records from the second millennium BC mention frenzied women. These women were thought to speak for a god. In Egypt, the goddess Wadjet had a famous oracle in her temple. Some thinkers believe this Egyptian tradition might have spread to Greece. The oracle at Dodona may even go back to the second millennium BC. It was a very old and respected place in the Greek world.

Many famous names and places are linked to oracles. The Pythia was the priestess for Apollo at Delphi. She was a powerful leader in ancient Greece. A king named Croesus once tested the oracle at Delphi. He asked what he was doing at that exact moment. The oracle correctly said he was making a lamb and tortoise stew.

Another important site was the oracle at Didyma on the coast. In China, people used oracle bones for their own kind of divination.

Oracles often gave answers that were hard to understand. They used words that could have two different meanings. This helped the prophecy fit whatever happened in the future. For example, one answer about war could be read in two ways. This allowed the person to be right no matter the outcome. Even the philosopher Socrates spoke about the oracle at Delphi. He said it was an essential guide for personal development.
