Necromancy is a type of magic used to talk to the dead.

People who practice it try to summon spirits as visions or apparitions. They do this to find hidden knowledge or to see the future. This practice is sometimes called death magic. It is also sometimes linked to witchcraft or black magic. The word comes from Greek words for a dead body and divination. Divination is a way to predict what will happen. This idea was first written down in the 3rd century AD.

Rituals for necromancy can be very complex and long. They might last for hours, days, or even weeks. Some practitioners use magic circles, wands, or special charms called talismans. They might also use specific words called incantations to call spirits. Some people chose to work in quiet or sad places like graves. They often preferred to summon spirits of people who died recently. They believed these spirits could speak more clearly. Some rituals even involved wearing the clothes of the dead. They might eat certain foods that symbolized death to help the process.

This practice has a very long history across many lands. It was common in ancient Egypt, Babylonia, Greece, Rome, and China. In ancient Greece, the story of Odysseus is a famous account. Guided by the sorceress Circe, Odysseus traveled to the underworld. He used spells to try to speak with the spirit of Tiresias. He had to follow a strict recipe for his ritual. This included using a fire pit at night and animal blood. In China, folk religion includes seeking blessings from ancestors through rituals. In Persia, people called diviners by the dead were very well known.

Different cultures had different rules about these spirits. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed spirits only knew certain things. They thought spirits might share news or gossip from the underworld. In the Bible, there are stories about necromancy as well. The Book of Deuteronomy warns the Israelites not to use these practices. One famous story tells of King Saul and the Witch of Endor. Saul asked the witch to call up the spirit of Samuel. This was a very serious event in the text. Some people even called these practitioners "bone-conjurers."

During the Middle Ages, ideas about necromancy changed again. Many people believed that calling spirits was actually calling on demons. The Catholic Church spoke out against this practice. Some practitioners were very well educated and knew Latin. They might use plants like belladonna or mandrake in their work. They believed they could use magic to change how others think. They also hoped to use it to find lost objects. They used magic circles to protect themselves from evil spirits. These circles were seen as fortresses for the person performing the ritual.
