Many people around the world believe in ghosts. A ghost is often described as the soul or spirit of a person or an animal.

Some believe these spirits can appear to people who are still living. Descriptions of ghosts change depending on the story. Some people see an invisible presence or a misty, wispy shape. Others describe ghosts as lifelike forms that look exactly like real humans.

Some stories even tell of huge ghostly armies or animals. These spirits are often thought to haunt specific places, objects, or people from their past lives.

There are many different words used to describe these spirits. People might use terms like phantom, specter, or apparition. A poltergeist is a special kind of ghost said to be noisy.

This type of spirit is believed to move objects invisibly. Other words include wraith, shade, and spook. The word spook actually came from the Dutch language. It entered English through American English during the 1800s. Each of these words helps people describe different ways a spirit might appear or act.

Beliefs in spirits are very old and found in many cultures. Some people follow traditions like ancestor worship or animism.

In these traditions, people might perform special rituals to help spirits rest. Some cultures use funeral rites or even magic to manage the spirits of the dead. For example, some traditions use ritual feeding to honor the deceased. The Chinese Ghost Festival and Western All Souls' Day are examples of this. Other groups use magical banishment to make sure spirits do not return to the living world.

History shows us how the word "ghost" has changed over time. It comes from the Old English word "gāst," which meant breath, spirit, or soul.

In the 9th century, it was sometimes used to mean the breath of a god. The idea of a ghost being the soul of a dead person only became common in the 14th century. Some ancient cultures even drew the soul as a bird. The Egyptian Book of the Dead shows people in the afterlife wearing their usual clothes. This shows how much people have wondered about the life that might come after death.

Science looks at these ideas in a different way. Most scientists say there is no proof that ghosts exist.

A 2009 study by the Pew Research Center found that 18% of Americans say they have seen a ghost. Researchers have looked for other reasons why people might see things. Some studies suggest that certain medicines or brain diseases might cause hallucinations. Even with these scientific views, ghost stories are still a huge part of our books and movies. They remain a way for people to explore big questions about life and what happens next.
