People who believe in them say these spirits move objects or make loud noises. Some stories say they can pinch, bite, or trip people. They might also make furniture move or lift things into the air.

Other reports include strange smells or flickering lights. These stories have been told in many places like Brazil, Japan, and the United States. The very first recorded cases date back to the 1st century.

There are many different ideas about how these events happen. Some people believe they are caused by ghosts or spirits. For example, Allan Kardec founded Spiritism and taught that these are low-level spirits. He believed they were linked to things like fire, air, water, and earth. Other people suggest the cause might be psychokinesis, which is a way of moving things with the mind. These ideas are part of many different belief systems around the world.

Many thinkers have looked for other explanations for these mysteries. Some people think the events are just tricks or hoaxes. A researcher named Frank Podmore suggested a "naughty little girl" theory. He thought children might cause the mischief to get attention. Investigator Joe Nickell said that people often try to play pranks. He noted that witnesses might also exaggerate what they see. This can make a small trick seem like a huge event.

Other experts look at how the human mind works. Some say these events are caused by things like memory lapses or wishful thinking. A researcher named Walter Franklin Prince studied a case in 1922. He thought the events were caused by a psychological state called dissociation. Even the famous thinker Carl Gustav Jung studied these ideas. He thought some sounds might come from a person's subconscious mind. He once heard a bookcase make a loud cracking sound during a meeting.

Scientists have also tried to find natural reasons for these disturbances. A magician named Milbourne Christopher found that strong air currents can move things. He studied a case from 1957 where wind from a chimney moved a mirror. Another idea is that moving water underground might make a house shake. Some people even think that lightning or earthquakes could be the cause. People continue to study these strange reports to find the truth.
