A White Lady is a type of female ghost.

She is usually seen wearing a white dress or a similar garment. These legends are found in many different countries around the world. Many stories link her to a sense of tragedy or loss. Some people believe she appears because of a death that was accidental or planned. Other legends say she appears because of a broken heart or a betrayal.

In some old stories, she might appear in a house where a family member will soon die. Some even say she appears in photos near a death.

Different cultures have their own ways of describing these spirits. In Brazil, she is called Dama Branca or Mulher de Branco. She is often described as a pale woman in a long white gown.

In Canada, people call them Dames blanches. One famous legend is near Montmorency Falls near Quebec City. It tells of a woman who died in the water while wearing her wedding dress. In the Netherlands, they are called Witte Wieven. These spirits might be helpful or they might be harmful. Some people think the name actually means "wise women." They are often seen in the mist or on the moors.

Many of these stories come from long ago. In the Czech Republic, a famous legend is about Perchta of Rožmberk. She lived around the years 1429 to 1476. She was the daughter of a nobleman named Oldřich II of Rožmberk.

Perchta married Jan of Lichtenštejn in 1449. Her marriage was very unhappy. She wrote 32 letters to her family about her bad life. Legend says she returned as a ghost to her family lands after she died.

Other stories are tied to specific places and dates. In Germany, White Ladies are linked to the Hohenzollern family castles. One ghost appeared at the Berliner Schloss in 1598 and again in 1618.

Another story is about a woman at Haus Aussel from the time of the Thirty Years' War. In the Philippines, the White Lady of Balete Drive is very well known. Taxi drivers in Quezon City tell stories about her. They say she might ask for a ride in the early morning. Some believe a reporter made this legend up in the 1950s.

These legends connect to how people understand the world. They often use ghosts to explain why bad things happen. In Russia, the legend of Bulzhuuhai Duuhai tells of a spirit who haunts weddings.

In Estonia, a spirit is said to live in Haapsalu Castle. She might be seen on clear nights with a full moon. These stories show how people use tales to talk about life and death. They help us explore the mystery of what we cannot see.
