A wedding dress is a special gown worn by a bride. It is a very important part of a wedding ceremony. These dresses show a person's own style and their culture. They can also show the values of a whole society. In Western cultures, many brides choose a white dress. In Eastern cultures, brides often pick red colors. These colors carry deep meanings for the people wearing them.

How a dress looks depends on many different things. Some brides like very simple and modern designs. Others like dresses with lots of lace or frills. In the 1920s, dresses were often short in the front. They had a long train in the back. They were also worn with special veils. Today, some gowns use tulle or bright crystals. Some dresses even have a drop-waist shape.

History shows us that wedding styles change over time. Long ago, weddings were about joining families or nations. These were often political deals between powerful groups. Because of this, brides wore clothes to show family wealth. Rich brides used silk, velvet, or even fur. The price of the fabric showed how much money a family had. Brides from lower social classes wore their best church dresses.

Color history is also very interesting. Queen Victoria helped make white dresses popular in 1840. She wore a white gown with Honiton lace. Before this, brides wore many different colors. In Finland, black was once a popular choice. In 1406, Philippa of England wore white silk with squirrel trim. In 1559, Mary, Queen of Scots, wore white because it was her favorite color. Even though white is common now, it was not always the main choice.

Different parts of the world have their own traditions. In India, many brides wear a red wedding sari. These are often made of silk with gold patterns. Red is a color linked to married women there. In Kurdish culture, a first-time bride might wear red. A bride who was married before might wear pink. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, white symbolizes purity. All people in those temple weddings wear white to show equality.
