The dress shows a person's style and culture. In Western cultures, many brides wear white. Queen Victoria made white gowns popular in 1840. Before that, brides wore many colors. In Finland, black was a popular choice.

In some Eastern cultures, brides wear red. In India, a bride might wear a red sari. A sari is a long piece of cloth. Red is a color for married women there.

Long ago, dresses showed a family's wealth. Rich brides wore silk, velvet, or fur. This showed their high social standing. Other brides wore their best church dress. Today, styles change a lot. Some brides like simple looks. Others like dresses with lace or crystals. Some gowns use tulle, which is a light fabric. New designs in 2024 include drop-waist styles. These dresses help brides show who they are.
