The name comes from a Latin word. It means a loose outer garment. People have worn them for many years.

In the Middle Ages, many people wore gowns. Students at early schools wore them too. They wore gowns and hoods. These items showed their status. In Italy, gowns changed their look. Some had high waists. Others had low waists. Women also wore a robone. This was a gown lined with fur for warmth.
