Some people call this a ceremony.

These days began in Europe a long time ago. In the twelfth century, universities were groups of teachers. The words graduate and degree come from a word that means "step." A student takes steps to earn a degree. The first step is a bachelor's degree. The next step is a master's degree. This lets a person teach others.

Many students wear gowns and hats to these events. These clothes come from old styles of dress. In Sweden, students wear white sailor hats. These hats have a dark band.

Graduation can happen at many schools. In the United States, students graduate from high school. Some people even have ceremonies for kindergarten.
