You earn it at a college or university. It shows you have deep knowledge of a subject. Most people get this degree after a bachelor's degree.

This idea is very old. In the year 1233, a rule said masters could teach at many schools. At first, masters and doctors were seen as the same. By the 1400s, people used "master" for arts teachers. They used "doctor" for higher subjects.

In the 1800s, many new kinds of degrees appeared. Schools began to offer degrees in science and surgery. Some people had to pass tests to earn them. Others got them just by staying at the school for a long time.

In 1902, Dartmouth College gave out a degree in business. This was the start of the modern business degree. Today, many students use master's degrees for their jobs. These degrees help people solve hard problems and think for themselves.
