society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A graduation is a special event for students. It is when a school gives a diploma to a person. This diploma shows that they finished their studies. People also call these ceremonies commencement or convocation. The day of the ceremony is often called graduation day. You can even refer to students by their year of graduation.

Many ceremonies follow a specific way of working. During the event, an officer formally gives degrees to the candidates. This can happen to one person at a time. It can also happen to a whole group at once. Sometimes, students get their physical diploma later in the mail. A procession of staff and students often walks in the ceremony. This event may also include a valediction.

These traditions started a long time ago in Europe. In the twelfth century, the first universities began. At that time, scholars used Latin to speak. A university was a guild of masters who had a license to teach. The words degree and graduate come from a word meaning "step." The first step was for a bachelor's degree. The second step was the masters step. This step gave a person a license to teach.

Students often wear special clothes like gowns and hoods. These clothes are based on what staff wore in the Middle Ages. In Sweden, students have a unique hat tradition. This started at Uppsala University in the mid-eighteenth century. The cap is a white sailor hat with a dark band. It has a crown motif and a black peak. This style of headgear became popular in other European nations too.

Graduation looks different in every country. In the United States, students graduate from high school. In Israel, they receive a Bagrut certificate. In India, even preschool children have a passing out ceremony. In Zimbabwe, the president may attend state university graduations. In Argentina and Uruguay, people celebrate with big street parties. These parties can be very messy with eggs and flour.
