It proves that a person finished their studies successfully. Some people call this a degree certificate or a parchment. In Australia, it is often called a testamur. This name comes from a Latin word that means "we certify." A diploma can also be a very important award. For example, a Nobel laureate receives a diploma. In the past, a monarch used diplomas to grant land to people.

Different countries have different ways to earn these awards. In Canada, schools use a system of credits. A student might need 60 credits for a two-year program. One course might count for 3 credits. In Indonesia, diplomas are linked to specific levels. A Diploma Satu takes one year to finish. It requires 36 credits and is at NQF Level 3. A Diploma Empat takes four years. This requires 144 credits and is at Level 6.

Some diplomas are meant for learning specific jobs. In India, people earn diplomas in nursing or pharmacy. They can also study engineering. These diplomas come from government schools or private groups. In Greece, a diploma in engineering takes five years. This is a very long and deep study program. It is equal to a Master of Engineering degree.

Students can also earn a Vocational Training Diploma through the E.O.P.P.E.P. organization.

In other places, diplomas are part of a big ladder of learning. In the United Kingdom, a diploma is not the same as a degree. A degree is a higher level than a diploma. In Ireland, a Graduate Diploma is a Level 9 degree. This is equal to a master's degree. Instead of a long written thesis, students often finish a big project. In New Zealand, there are five different types of diplomas. These range from Level 5 up to Level 8.

Diplomas help people move forward in their lives. In Japan, a certificate of graduation is given at many levels. This includes everything from elementary school to university. In Mexico, university diplomas are often called a "título." Some people also take a "Diplomado" for special training. In Spain, university diplomas are very official. They are issued in the name of the King. These documents are protected by law and recognized by many countries.
