society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An academic degree is a special qualification. It is given to a student after they finish a course of study in higher education. These degrees are usually organized into different levels. Most people start with undergraduate degrees. The most common undergraduate degree is the bachelor's degree. Some systems also offer associate degrees or foundation degrees. After that, students can earn postgraduate degrees. These include the master's degree and the doctorate.

Degrees work by showing what a person has learned. In the past, getting a degree was like an apprenticeship. Students often studied the Liberal Arts. This included subjects like grammar, logic, and music. After three or four years, they could become a Bachelor of Arts. To become a Master of Arts, they had to do more work. They often had to participate in debates. This helped them earn the right to teach. The word "graduate" comes from a Latin word meaning "to step."

History shows us how these titles began. The doctorate first appeared in medieval Europe. It was a license to teach. The word comes from the Latin word "doceo," which means "I teach." Long ago, the church controlled who could teach. In 1231, the Pope gave this right to the University of Paris. This allowed the university to give a universal license to teach. The University of Bologna in Italy was also very important. It was the first to give a Doctor of Civil Law degree in the late 12th century.

Names of degrees often tell us what was studied. Early doctoral degrees were in three main fields. These were theology, law, and medicine. Other subjects were called philosophy. Today, we call those subjects sciences or humanities. The Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D., is a newer type of degree. It is based on research and was developed in German universities. In the UK, some degrees have honors. These are divided into classes like first class or second class.

Degrees are still very important in our world today. Many countries have laws about who can give degrees. Usually, only authorized universities can award them. In some places, people wear special academic dress. These clothes show their status at a school. People also use letters after their names to show their degrees. For example, some people use Latin abbreviations. Some schools use "Oxon" for Oxford or "Cantab" for Cambridge. These help people identify a person's hard work and learning.
